- West Oakland celebrates and honors Marvin X. Jackmon, who grew up on 7th and Campbell, attended McFeely, Prescott Elementary and Lowell Jr. High, then Merritt College where he joined Bobby Seale, Huey Newton and a host of other students, aka, neo-black intellectuals, to initiate the west coast and national black arts and liberation movements. After exile and imprisonment for refusing to fight in Vietnam, Marvin X taught at Fresno State University, UC Berkeley, UC San Diego, San Francisco State University, Mills College, University of Nevada, Reno, Laney College, Merritt College and elsewhere. Aside from speaking and reading coast to coast, he holds class in Oakland at his Academy of da Corner, 14th and Broadway and Lakeshore Ave. Ishmael Reed calls him, "Plato teaching on the streets of Oakland." Bob Holman says, "He's the USAs Rumi, Saadi, Hafiz...."
